Even Iron Fist Can’t Punch Through Positivity

This weekly post highlights positivity in the martial arts from around the world. Unfortunately, it is far too easy to find negative stories on the internet. Positive ones, however, are harder to find. Let’s recognize and celebrate those martial artists and schools who are doing good things in their communities, as well as, making great accomplishments.

Just in case you didn’t read the opening paragraph, there is a very simple purpose to the weekly Positivity post here on Martial Journal. That by spreading and highlighting positivity, we can make the world a better place. You can do the same thing in your local community by doing whatever works for you to leave a positive impression on your students and the community as a whole. Champions Martial Arts Academy understands this premise as they recently held their annual block party carnival with proceeds benefiting a local charity. Now that’s one way to do Positivity!

I have talked in this space many times about the concepts of perseverance and overcoming hardships in the martial arts. I have also mentioned that doing this in the martial arts can translate to doing the same in life. A while back, I shared the story of Issac Martin who was battling a rare and aggressive type of cancer. Regardless of whatever accolades he achieves in life, he will have one that few martial artists his age can claim: Cancer survivor. He credits the support of his fellow students and instructors as part of his recovery. His story is so inspiring and worth reading!

Leaving that mark of Positivity on the world outside of the dojo, for me, is extremely important. The outreach can have tangible benefits for your school. It can have a lasting effect on your students as they see the benefits of positivity and generosity at work. Additionally, it is simply great PR for your studio and may help you get more students. There is very little downside here. The owners of North Texas Karate Academy may be aware of the internal and external benefits as they recently held a karate invitational with the proceeds to help pay for children’s cancer treatments.

When we think of those older instructors who hold high dan ranks, words like “dedication” and “longevity” come to mind. We also tend to think of their martial arts career in linear terms, as if they just simply achieved one rank after another. Listen to any one of their life stories and you may be surprised to find that this is not the case. Quite often, there are twists, turns, and unexpected tangents in those stories. Here we have just one such kind of story about the life of Master Dan Cuthbertson.
