Positivity-positive thinking

It Is Hot As Positivity Outside!

This weekly post highlights positivity in the martial arts from around the world. Unfortunately, it is far too easy to find negative stories on the internet. Positive ones, however, are harder to find. Let’s recognize and celebrate those martial artists and schools who are doing good things in their communities, as well as, making great accomplishments.

Over the years of human history, there have been many famous pairings. Reese’s put peanut butter and chocolate together with great success. Where would Batman be without Robin (though he has gone through a few of them)? Similarly, there are many pairings in the martial arts, Yin and Yang being an easy example. But what about Capoeira and ballet? Well “Find Your Center” owners, Kate and Deshawn Robins, think it is a great pairing and opened a school that teaches both!

There is a first time for everything. For some things, the first time is the only time, and for others that first time leads to it happening again. This is usually due to a very positive response or memory of that first time. There is a reason we have weekly, monthly, and annual events all the time. Bill Cho’s United Taekwondo Center had such a positive response to their first-ever “Kicking it for Cancer” event that they are thinking about having one every year.

Let us look at the topic of “firsts” in another way, specifically being “the first.” Being “the first” in many things is basically putting your name in the history books. It is highly likely we all know who the first man on the moon was. While not all “firsts” will get high schools named after you, it is something that can never be taken away from you. This definitely applies to Shane Jamil Hill-Taylor. He recently became the first African-American to hold the World Champion title at the fifth international tournament of the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation. Congratulations Shane!

Many times through your lifetime, you will be thrown a “curve-ball” that comes out of nowhere. These kinds of events can threaten to derail your progress, or send you in a different direction. Regardless, it is these times that require a trait commonly cultivated in many martial artists: perseverance. The owner and students of Sault Ste. Marie International Karate Daigaku recieved just such a “curve-ball” when they found out that a nearby fire badly damaged their studio. As they regroup and continue training, the mother of one student has set up a GoFundMe campaign to help until insurance kicks in. Good luck and keep fighting!
