Positivity-Happy Post-it's

Spring Is All About Positivity…….Wait, It Is Spring…….Right?

This weekly post highlights positivity in the martial arts from around the world. Unfortunately, it is far too easy to find negative stories on the internet. Positive ones, however, are harder to find. Let’s recognize and celebrate those martial artists and schools who are doing good things in their communities, as well as, making great accomplishments.

While some of us were introduced to martial arts at a very young age, there are those who weren’t. You can call them “late bloomers” if you wish. Some of us have already lived some life, searching for that something that had been elusive, just out of reach. They might try this activity, or that sport, but nothing felt quite right. Then, somehow, we stumble upon it. Whether on purpose or by accident, it matters not. It is when we found the martial arts that the final puzzle piece was finally set. Here we have a self-written story about just such a person who was searching, until he finally found what he was looking for.

Personally, I love martial arts movies, both good and bad. I know that among martial artists I am in good company. What can be a little confusing however is when we get into some of these martial arts movies that have a historical basis and background. There are many iterations of the late Grandmaster Ip Man, and some of them differ greatly. This is also the case with other historical martial arts figures like Miyamoto Musashi. For a fantastic breakdown of myth versus truth with Musashi, check out episodes onetwo, and three on Martial Thoughts podcast. Generally speaking, over time, legend tends to grow and stretch beyond reasonable boundaries. Here is an article that briefly breaks down historical martial arts figures stories and notes which movies they have been featured in.

Being employed in the field of Physical Therapy, I know how important good posture is. It can greatly affect the quality of our lives in the later years, to say the least. We have heard all of the corrections from others before. “Stand up straight.” “Chest out and shoulders back!” Needless to say, they don’t last long because I even catch myself slumping over from time to time. What if there was a martial art that could help with posture? Well, we are in luck as the Harvard Medical School seems to think that the answer may be found in the martial arts!

Many of us have at least considered opening our own studio at one point or another. Anyone who is honest knows that doing so involves a lot more than just teaching our martial art of choice. Sure, everybody knows about signing leases and buying some equipment. But what about that insurance? Then there is the paper towels, toilet paper, cleaning products, among countless other things that are not thought about. Here we have a story of a martial artist and single mother of two who didn’t just open a martial arts studio, but she is thriving and growing!

Martial artists can end up dealing with many health problems throughout the years of their training. Some are transient, while others require life-long management. Cystic Fibrosis is a genetic disease that affects the lungs, making them susceptible to infections. It can also make breathing very difficult over time as the young person ages. For more information about Cystic Fibrosis, you can find it here. Here we have a story about a young man who is not letting Cystic Fibrosis keep him from training!
