April Showers Bring May Positivity!

This weekly post highlights positivity in the martial arts from around the world. Unfortunately, it is far too easy to find negative stories on the internet. Positive ones, however, are harder to find. Let’s recognize and celebrate those martial artists and schools who are doing good things in their communities, as well as, making great accomplishments.

I am all for self-defense classes being offered anywhere, anytime. It is surely better than nothing. How much better than nothing is the question though? Louis Martin recently wrote about this question here. While I always advocate for full-on training as a student, I will take something over nothing any day of the week. No, you won’t be proficient in self-defense after a couple seminars. However, you may have taken away one or two striking concepts that could save your life. Better yet, you may have learned some things that could save your life without you ever having to land a strike.

There is no such thing as an easy martial arts journey. Every single one has it’s high’s and low’s. Difficult belt material and demanding instructors are easy ones to point to. But what about when you add in injuries and health problems? Those are definitely obstacles to any martial arts journey. Here we have a story about a woman who has dealt with significant health obstacles throughout her martial arts life and has doggedly refused to let it defeat her!

We all found a home in the martial arts for a multitude of reasons. Our “home” became the mat, dojo, studio, etc… It did not matter because we just wanted to train. But for many of us, after years of training, we crossed a bit of a threshold. Maybe it was that one time your instructor asked you to take that new white belt off to the side to work on some basics with him/her. For some, it was that gut-wrenching moment when your instructor told you with no warning: “You are going to teach class tonight.” Regardless of how, when, or where, many of us have discovered the joy of passing on knowledge to another. Speaking only for myself, I have also been humbled at how much my students have taught me. Here we have a local interview article about Mr. Robert Morey, a practitioner who also enjoys passing on his knowledge.

Sometimes it is easy to forget how good you have it. Things like electricity and running water are easy to take for granted. Our ability to, generally speaking, go where we want and do what we want is another example that is all too easy to take for granted. What if someone told you that you could not go practice martial arts? Maybe they said you couldn’t wear that dress or shirt? Or drive? Individual freedom is something not everyone has. Here we have an article about a young woman that is trying to do her small part to change the culture in her home country. She is doing it with martial arts!
