Positivity-Happy faces

I Can Feel Positivity Coming In the Air Tonight!

This weekly post highlights positivity in the martial arts from around the world. Unfortunately, it is far too easy to find negative stories on the internet. Positive ones, however, are harder to find. Let’s recognize and celebrate those martial artists and schools who are doing good things in their communities, as well as, making great accomplishments.

No matter what art or style we train in, we typically train for various amounts of improved health and physical benefits. However, many of us train for self-defense. We put in countless hours of sweat, pain, and sometimes blood, to be able to improve our chances of walking away from a violent encounter in better shape than the attacker. But the real question here is when you are face to face with violence, are you willing to do what’s necessary? You can read more about giving yourself the permission to be violent here. Giving yourself the permission to be violent sounds easy, but as you’ll read here in this article, it wasn’t for Ms. Herder at the time. Since then, she has learned from the experience and passing on that knowledge.

Beginning any training that improves the ability to defend oneself is never a bad thing. Many people gravitate to this kind of training due to a previous incident (bullying, sexual assault, etc..) that made them realize they couldn’t defend themselves. While most people find the self-defense improvements they were looking for, they usually find something else as well. Improved confidence and awareness are other attributes that also see an improvement. Read on about a Krav Maga Gym that is giving people more than just good strikes and blocks.

Martial arts competitions can present a strange paradox to a participant. We train and work hard so that we can get better. We often get rewarded for our hard work in different ways (instructor praise, rank advancement, etc). Competitions, however, tend to be highly rewarding or soul-crushing experiences. No matter how hard you train, there are usually only two or three people recognized when it is all said and done. You can read here for another Martial Journal article about this. Three participants, or three thousand, it makes no difference. Here we have an article about a young man who earned his medals in a field of thousands of competitors!

There are many physical benefits a young child can get from martial arts. Improved balance, kinesthetic awareness, and a constructive outlet for their energy just to name a few. I see this often as I teach a class of 7 to 9-year-olds. The longer they are there, the more they improve. But those physical benefits are nothing compared to the internal benefits they receive, most notably, respect for others. Here is an article about a Taekwondo school that teaches the kicks and punches in addition to the respect.

When martial artists compete at events, we tend to form bonds and friendships. I’ve heard many stories of this kind listening to the interviews on Whistlekick Martial Arts Radio. However, could a shared martial arts history bring countries together and foster improved relations? While it may not, it never hurts to try. That’s exactly what has been happening with the Taekwondo teams from South and North Korea with the current Winter Olympics. Read on for more!
