This weekly post highlights positivity in the martial arts from around the world. Unfortunately, it is far too easy to find negative stories on the internet. Positive ones, however, are harder to find. Let’s recognize and celebrate those martial artists and schools who are doing good things in their communities, as well as, making great accomplishments.

Cancer. That is a word that can get anybody’s attention or bring a conversation to a halt quickly. It is so prevalent that it would be difficult to find a person who does not know someone who has dealt with it. Unfortunately, cancer does not only affect adults. It affects children too. Thankfully, there are groups like Kids Kicking Cancer Israel that are using the martial arts to help young children stricken with cancer to cope and recover. Read on to see what they are doing to make a difference!

Lee’s Summit, Missouri, USA

It is quite easy to take all of our physical capabilities for granted. I’m not even talking about high-end techniques like reverse jump hook kicks. I am talking about the mindless things like walking, eating, rolling out of bed, and dressing oneself.  Limitations can come from injuries or genetics. At the Tamashii Black Belt Academy, they tailor the instruction to the capabilities of the individual student in their Adaptive Martial Arts class.

Regardless of where conflict happens, or the reasons for it, combat veterans can have life-altering experiences there. The physical and emotional toll of combat can stay with a veteran for the rest of his or her life. However, there has been some success in helping veterans and Tai Chi. That success is now being shared across the country to help other veterans as well!

There are many types of groups and activities available to youths to join and participate in. While some are positive or benign, others are definitely a negative. Gangs, drugs, and crime to name a few. It is critical to give youths better and more attractive options to keep them on the path to success and growth. The El Modena Family Resource Center is doing just such a thing by offering karate to provide a better path forward.

This one is short, simple, and sweet. A local Shotokan school in the area is collecting gently used shoes to raise funds for their competition costs, and simultaneously help people in need in developing countries. If you can help, please do so!
