The BJJ and Weightlifting Lifestyle: How to Balance Both for Optimal Results

bjj and weight training

Are you finding yourself skipping the gym because you have a newfound excuse of training martial arts? It is really easy to tell ourselves that the gym is no longer important because we are taking some kind of martial art, but we are here to tell you this should not be the case. The key to an amazing life is balance. Martial arts are a transformative thing for many of us that train but for optimal results, we need to work in some weight training a couple of times a week. This article will discuss some ways to balancing weights and BJJ.

Balancing Weights and BJJ

Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is a martial art that challenges you in ways that most people do not experience while weight training in the gym. While we believe in the importance of taking some kind of martial art for your physical and mental well-being, we believe it is equally important to fit in a couple of weight training sessions throughout your week.

Balancing Weights and BJJ

Life is all a balancing act and while training BJJ you will have to balance fitting weights into your weekly routine. Managing your time and setting achievable goals is the key to making your life a bit easier when doing this.

While Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a great way to get cardio and strength training in throughout the week, focused attention to specific muscle groups will make you a stronger and more explosive athlete. Fitting upper and lower body workouts will only make it easier for you to get more shredded, you are already burning tons of fat while training BJJ so putting on muscle and having a more muscular frame will be that much easier.

Living a Healthy Lifestyle

Living a healthy life is about balance. Working out and eating nutritious meals will only make it easier for you to achieve your fitness goals.

Many people go into the new year with an expectation of changing certain things about themselves and the top of that list is usually their health and wellness. Taking on and embracing martial arts is a great first step, add on healthy foods and weight training and you will be well on your way.

How to Balance Both BJJ and Weightlifting

Balancing your martial arts training and still finding time to make it to the gym is a balancing act that is not easy to accomplish for most people.

When coming to this crossroad you have to look at your schedule and identify the holes that are in it to fit some weight training in. Working out on a daily basis is not going to hurt you in the long term. As long as you are not maxing out on every lift, you will be okay. Mix this in with the cardio you get at your martial arts gym and you will end up shredded in no time!

Time Management

Managing your time in a way that is suitable for weights and martial arts training is going to take some sacrifice and dedication but it is possible. Getting into the best shape of your life is a great goal and to get there you will have to do the following:

  • Narrow down your goals and ask yourself how often you would like to train
  • Come Prepared to the gym with workouts already set in place (there are apps that can help with this)
  • Make time on your calendar – this may mean waking up 30 minutes earlier or staying up a bit later.
  • Set a timer when you walk into the gym. We find that we can get a great, focused workout in about 30 – 45 minutes. There is no need to stay longer if you come prepared with a plan

Analyze what is essential to you, identify your goals, and set up a schedule that is in favor of these two things. When you do this you are well on your way to being able to effectively balance BJJ and weight training.

Training martial arts is a transformative process for many people that take it seriously. It is a great way to completely reshape how you view yourself and go down a path of self-improvement. When training, nothing else outside those four walls matters, we are so present in the moment that it makes it hard to worry about the outside world. When we embrace this way of living it is still equally important to mix in a couple of days a week of weights to keep our muscles strong and our bodies looking amazing!
