Positivity Is A New Season Of Football!

This weekly post highlights positivity in the martial arts from around the world. Unfortunately, it is far too easy to find negative stories on the internet. Positive ones, however, are harder to find. Let’s recognize and celebrate those martial artists and schools who are doing good things in their communities, as well as, making great accomplishments.

Devil’s Lake, North Dakota, USA

What does it take to be a “World Champion” in anything? Beyond competing at a high level, it takes an extraordinary amount of hard work. People see the championship match/game/bout, but don’t see the very real practice, sweat, failure, and sacrifice that led to that moment. Alex Paulson, who has Down’s Syndrome, knows all about the hard work that is necessary to be a World Champion. He recently achieved World Champion in forms in ATA Taekwondo!

I have spoken here in the past about how the martial arts can blur and break down cultural barriers, despite the cultural heredity of most styles of martial arts. The martial artists of one style can usually at least respect practitioners of other styles. In some cases, they publicly embrace those of other styles. Here we have the story of Ray Tokuda, a Japanese-American who holds the title of Shifu in Kung Fu at his school.

September is Realtor Safety Month, and for good reason. Realtors tend to be vulnerable because they are quite often alone in homes with relative strangers, or alone in homes they think are empty. Many Realtors have experienced uncomfortable situations and even violence in their line of work. Fortunately, Tracy Macrum is educating her fellow Realtors with her experience in Krav Maga.

As a martial artist, I enjoy seeing the arts grow in popularity. Currently, we are getting a bit of a renaissance with good martial arts on display in movies and television lately. However, there is another arena in which traditional martial arts is seeing growth. Karate Combat recently had their third event in Greece and they’re not stopping there. They just launched a dedicated Roku channel and have promised an announcement on their next live event soon!
