Enjoy Some Positivity This Labor Day Weekend!

This weekly post highlights positivity in the martial arts from around the world. Unfortunately, it is far too easy to find negative stories on the internet. Positive ones, however, are harder to find. Let’s recognize and celebrate those martial artists and schools who are doing good things in their communities, as well as, making great accomplishments.

You can see the last installment here.

A tragic event is something most of us will experience at some point in our lives and the unexpected loss of a loved one most definitely qualifies as on. These kinds of events have the potential to send us down very dark paths if we do not handle and process the grief in a positive and constructive way. Sensei Anthony Scott, owner of Pocono Self Defense School, understands this kind of tragedy all too well. He credits Seido Karate with not only putting him on a better path but also creating a school that is highly active in giving back to the community.

The loss of any one of the five senses a human has can be devastating. Imagine how your life might change if you woke up one day and could no longer hear or see. That is a massive amount of sensory data input that has been removed from your life. That loss would also significantly change how you go about living your life in the future. Steve Birkin is someone who knows about this all too well. He hasn’t let it stop him as has since taken up Taekwondo and been competing at high levels nationally!

Starting anything new in an area is much like growing a plant. You must first plant the seed and keep the long-term goal in mind. Most of the early growth is under the soil and not immediately visible. Even when it has finally pushed above the soil, it is small and very fragile. With constant care and nurturing along the way, something so small can become as large as a Maple, Oak, or Redwood tree. Baz Michaeli is familiar with this process. The Israel native has gone through this process when he brought his love of Capoeira from his homeland to plant its seed in Detroit.

Cinemax

Hold on to your seats! The martial arts renaissance we are experiencing in film and television is about to get just a little bigger. Justin Lin (the Fast and Furious movies, Star Trek Beyond) is working with the Bruce Lee Foundation and Cinemax to bring one of the television ideas the late Mr. Lee had to life. This is another one of those “call to action” moments where I tell you to make sure to check the show out and support it if it is high quality. As a martial artist, I want to keep seeing more and more of these kinds of shows put out there as it can help to grow our community. There is a teaser trailer at the link to check out!
