Positivity-Back to school

Back To School With Positivity!

This weekly post highlights positivity in the martial arts from around the world. Unfortunately, it is far too easy to find negative stories on the internet. Positive ones, however, are harder to find. Let’s recognize and celebrate those martial artists and schools who are doing good things in their communities, as well as, making great accomplishments.

We live in interesting times indeed. Originally each of the specific styles of martial arts was only found in its country or territory of origin. But with the wars of the 20th century and increased international trade and travel, the arts themselves expanded beyond their own borders at a rapid pace. We now live in an era where schools for these arts can be found all over the world. Reem Al Ouda discovered Filipino Martial Arts when she traveled to Washington for college and brought it back to her home country to help empower women!

Fighting. It is a word that we commonly consider to be negative or at least something to be avoided at all costs. However, is the concept of fighting always a bad thing? Sensei Ando’s first episode of his podcast has some thoughts about this here. Fighting can be a good thing when its done for the right reasons. Fit-For-It Taekwondo recently held a spar-athon where the participants were sponsored for each round they fought. The proceeds that were raised went to benefit those struggling with the droughts in the region recently.

In the process of life, it is common for us to be able to look back and identify specific formative moments in our lives. Meeting your other half or the birth of your child would qualify as a “moment.” Potentially, it could be a graduation or promotion. Unfortunately for many, it might be the moment they were mugged, bullied, or assaulted. Being put in a situation where you are totally powerless and can no longer deceive yourself into thinking that you can handle yourself in a confrontation can be very formative indeed. Many seek out martial arts training because of these moments. This was the case for Chelsah’ Lyons. Read on to see how she responded!

This is a fun one. We always want to see more martial arts portrayed in the media. Lately, we have been getting more shows and movies featuring martial arts. We’re getting more John Wick and Ip Man in the movies, and additionally, we continue to get good stuff from Into The Badlands and will be getting a new show with Iko Uwais on Netflix soon. If we support these shows, then we may continue to get more. Audi apparently senses this interest in martial arts on screen as they featured it in a new ad campaign. Check the video out!
