This weekly post highlights positivity in the martial arts from around the world. Unfortunately, it is far too easy to find negative stories on the internet. Positive ones, however, are harder to find. Let’s recognize and celebrate those martial artists and schools who are doing good things in their communities, as well as, making great accomplishments.

When it comes to self-defense education, there are many things to understand. The relationship between predator and prey is a big one. Understanding a predator’s possible motivations and goals, as well as what they are looking for in prey, is key. You must also be aware of how desirable you are making yourself as a potential prey. In short, predators are typically looking for the easy prey. Well, except the two in this story. They found prey but totally ignored the karate hoodie Kelly Soutar was wearing. They got much more than they bargained for. Way to go Ms. Soutar!

We all know that an education in the martial arts can be highly beneficial to a person. I think it is also apparent that these benefits are not confined to the training area. There are many benefits that translate into the home and work environments. Here is a great op-ed about how Tai Chi instruction can lead to insights into being a better manager at work.

Being a martial arts school owner comes with many responsibilities. You are responsible for your students, for making sure training equipment is in good shape, and even making sure the bathroom is stocked. But do your responsibilities go out beyond your studio, and into the community around you? Wu Dao Kung Fu definitely feels a responsibility to the community around it as they have various self-defense seminar programs for at-risk populations.

When it comes to schools in this country, there are typically a lot of extra-curricular activities that are available to participate in. Football, basketball, baseball, soccer, chess, band, and the list goes on. But why not martial arts? Having a martial arts or karate club at a university is not that uncommon. Yet, this is much rarer in K-12 schools. For this reason, it was interesting to see this story of a school teacher bringing martial arts into his school.
