‘Tis the Season for Positivity

This semi-regular post will attempt to highlight positivity in the martial arts from around the world. Unfortunately, it is far too easy to find negative stories on the internet. Positive ones, however, are harder to find. Let’s recognize and celebrate those martial artists and schools who are doing good things in their communities, as well as, making great accomplishments.

It can be truly awe-inspiring discovering the potential for generosity in people. Speaking specifically, martial artists are a typically generous folk by nature. So it shouldn’t be a surprise that martial artists will go above and beyond for others in need. This very kind of thing happened recently at Gracie University in California.

The concept of “giving” can take many forms. Typically, giving is thought of in terms of physical items. However, giving one’s time and effort can be just as valuable, if not more. Donating one’s time can not only make a difference in the lives of others but also yourself. The Kung-Fu nuns referenced in a previous Positivity post are currently donating their time and efforts to raise awareness for a cause that is near and dear to them.

Let us not get too hard on the giving of gifts here. Gifts given from one to another can be representative of thoughtfulness and appreciation. They can be even more profound when they come unexpectedly from someone you don’t know. This kind of generosity can positively change how a family feels around this time of year. The local branch of Jeff Speakman’s Kenpo Karate school obviously was feeling the giving spirit this year.

While we stick with a “giving” theme here, now we can look at it from a teaching perspective. As an instructor/school owner/leader, you can instill the benefits of a generous nature in your students. Many people tend to think that they can not make a difference in others lives, or they feel like there is too much going on in their lives to help others. We all know that perception is reality and by showing your students that they, in fact, can do something to help others can change that perception. Hwang’s Martial Arts school was blown away by the response they had to a food drive they organized for local shelters.

While the various holidays of this time of year can inspire generosity, there are other events that can also do this. Unfortunately, tragedy is one of those unexpected events. Recent hurricanes have devastated many families this year alone. JSK Martial Arts school was recently inspired to do something to help those affected.
